The above frame is from a film of Garijp made in 1955. Here is some background to the film:
In 1952, my parents Jan Tjeerdsma and his wife Aukje Tjeerdsma- Kloosterman, and their three children, Tjeerd (me), Eelke, and Alie, left Garyp and immigrated to Ontario, Canada. They left their entire family behind; except one brother of my mother, Symen, who had emigrated a year earlier. When they left, most of the family assumed they would never see each other again.
So, in 1955, some people in Garyp, ( I don’t know who), decided to travel around Garyp with a movie camera, and film throughout the town, showing many of the residents of the town and their occupations. This film was sent to my parents at that time, so they would have a good memory of their home town. Once the film arrived in Canada, my parents invited several other families, who also had a connection to Garyp and held a special evening when they showed the film. I remember it well, (I was 7 years old). I specifically remember seeing my Pake Eelke Kloosterman one of the town’s milk men.
This film lay in my mother’s cupboard for more than 55 years. When I was made aware it was still in existence. I decided to see if I could have it converted to a digital format and create a DVD. I found someone that could do this and the result is this 38 minute video.
To give viewers an idea of the contents and quality of the film I have decided to separate the first 15 minutes of the video into several 5 minute segments and upload them to YouTube. The version you see on YouTube is a low resolution version, however I do have a high resolution version of the entire video available on DVD. Should you wish to have a copy, please email me at stjeerds@yahoo.com .The cost is $20.00 CAD plus $5.00 for shipping. You can send your payment through PAYPAL
